Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a structural unit of the Faculty of General Medicine and trains students on the basis of two Healthcare Institutions in Vitebsk: “Vitebsk City Clinical Maternity Hospital No. 2” and “Vitebsk City Emergency Medical Care Hospital”. The discipline “Obstetrics and Gynecology” is taught to 4th, 5th, 6th year students of the General Medicine Faculty and Overseas Students Training Faculty, and 4th year students of the Stomatological Faculty. The Department has a “Laboratory of Professional Excellence” in order to improve the level of practical training of students. In addition to academic methods of mastering the theoretical foundations of the specialty and clinical examinations of patients, interactive computer methods of training and certification, and simulation training technologies are widely used in the pedagogical process.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has highly qualified specialists: 6 Doctors of Medical Sciences, Professors, 6 Associate Professors, PhD in Medical Sciences and 4 Assistants.

Scientific research of the Department’s staff is carried out in the following areas:

– improving the provision of medical care to women of reproductive age with herpes-associated recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis;

– development of an integrated approach to the treatment and prevention of recurrent vulvovaginitis in preschool girls with somatic pathology;

– optimization of obstetric tactics in women with complicated pregnancy (premature rupture of membranes, isthmic-cervical insufficiency, cytomegalovirus infection);

– development of new approaches to preconception preparation, diagnosis and management tactics for patients with female infertility;

Students of 4-6 years of the Faculty of General Medicine are actively involved in scientific research; there is also a Student Scientific Circle operating at the Department. The results of scientific research are actively introduced into the educational process and into the work of practical healthcare.

The members of the Department, being Doctors of the highest and first category, provide planned and emergency medical and advisory assistance in maternity institutions in Vitebsk, Vitebsk and Mogilev regions, conduct clinical conferences, seminars, participate in the work of commissions to assess the quality of medical and advisory assistance, implement new methods of diagnosis and treatment.

The staff of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology supports its best traditions and has powerful scientific and intellectual potential for solving pressing problems of modern obstetrics, perinatology and gynecology.
